મુસ્કાન [Muskan]

(My Feminist Commentary Part - 5/5)

I was fourteen when my school banned boys and girls from playing together during P.E. class. “We all like playing Kho-Kho (a national game). We’re all peers, so why can’t we play together? The school authorities are being orthodox. It’s ridiculous!” I complained to my father. “You think of boys as your peers?” he asked with a smile. “Obviously! Will you come to the school to protest against the ban?” I asked. “Learn to protest on your own,” he replied. After a pause, he added,

“It’s good that you think of them as your peers. Keep up that attitude. But they might not necessarily see you the same way!”

છાયા [Chhaya]

(My Feminist Commentary Part - 3/5)

“તમારી પેઢીની સ્ત્રીઓનો મૂળ વાંધો જ આ છે. તમને લોકોને લગ્ન કરવાની અને બાળકો ઉછેરવાની જાણે પડી જ નથી!”

Translation: “The root cause of the problem with your generation of women is that you don’t care about getting married and raising kids! ”

ઈલા [Ila]

(My Feminist Commentary Part - 2/5)

“છોકરીની જાત ને આટલો બધો તંત! છાયલી આને કાબૂમાં રાખ, નહીતર આને સાસરે કોઈ નઈ સંઘરે. આવી મોટી ભાઈ સાથે સરખામણી કરવાવાળી! સ્ત્રી ક્યારેય પુરુષ સમોવડી હોય જ નહીં. સમજી?”

Translation: “So much drama for a girl! Chhaya, keep her under control, otherwise, her in-laws wouldn’t keep her. Stop comparing yourself to your brother! A woman can never be an equal to a man. Do you understand?”

My Feminist Commentary Part - 1/5

My earliest memory of being at a disadvantage because of my gender is from the first day of school. “What is your name?” I had asked hoping to make friends with him. “I don’t talk to girls.” was his arrogant reply. We both were five. I remember being quite upset to be a girl on that particular day. Little did I know that life was going to bring me many serious disadvantages because of my gender!

Peace

I was thirteen when I witnessed the first funeral of my life. I heard people whispering, “He knew it was time. He asked to light a lamp and sat down to meditate. He left this world in a meditative state!” Soon, I saw his body being carried out of the room, still holding its seated posture, eyes closed, and the face seemingly peaceful. People started chanting religious words as I stood there, feeling an unexplainable sensation running through my body.

The Nest year

Time is a relative entity. For me, the Nest year is the period when I worked on Nest - a new OS thread scheduling policy as a Research Engineer. It was like piggybacking with my supervisor, where she did most of the heavy lifting, and provided me with a closer look at how things work in the Systems research world. I signed up for this adventure abandoning my specialization in ML and a well-paying job offer to determine if research life is my cup of tea or not!

Books on the history of Operating Systems

Linux turned 30 last year and it is older than me! I boarded the Linux train some three years ago, but I still think of myself as a curious newbie who has got a lot of catching up to do. So I started digging up and soon I was drowning in mailing list archives, lwn articles and conference recordings. It was fun until it started feeling overwhelming. I needed to make it fun again. And I discovered some books that really helped :).

Books to help understand Operating Systems

I recently compiled a list of books that can serve as a good reference for the new interns that join our group. I think it can be useful for anyone who is curious about operating systems. The list is based on my personal preference and some recommendations from my friends and mentors who work on the kernel. Of course there are many other good books that I haven’t included here as I haven’t personally checked them out yet.
